iSOFT helped Ingolstadt Clinic streamline the processing of 2.2 million analyses per year with the implementation of a new digital laboratory system.
The Challenge
Ingolstadt Clinic’s Institute of Laboratory Medicine creates about 2.2 million different analysis services per year. Its thirty four employees are responsible for processing 300,000 Microbiology, 1.8 million Clinical Chemistry and 60,000 Blood Bank analyses.
With increasing cost constraints placing pressure on the hospital system, the Ingolstadt Clinic was looking for a solution that improved turnaround of laboratory analyses and at the same time reduce costs.
“Our laboratory information system can be parameterised in a very flexible way, which enables us to make each individual work process extremely effective.”
Prof. Dr. Johannes Aufenanger
iSOFT Solution
To resolve their issues of timeliness, accuracy and the cost of running an efficient hospital laboratory, the Ingolstadt Clinic introduced iSOFT’s digital laboratory solution. Key benefits include:
- Integrated Clinical Chemistry, Blood Bank and Microbiology modules
- Electronic creation of requests, processing and transfer of results
- The changeover to the new system took place within one weekend
- A standardised graphical user interface across all modules makes operation very straightforward and flexible
- System creates coded barcodes labelled with examination instructions to decrease risk of confusion
- System saves on staff hours by scanning existing samples for possible reuse if further examinations are necessary
- Plausibility rules in the system check each result and warning sent if breach detected
- Increased analysis opportunities allowed for optimisation of workflows
- Flexible parameterisation allows for different workflows for each lab
- Automation of routine work frees staff to concentrate on more complex cases
Business Value
With iSOFT Laboratory the turnaround time of laboratory analyses has been drastically reduced with examination data made available in the wards within minutes. The average turnaround times in Clinical Chemistry are now less than 40 minutes; in Immunology and Infectious Disease Serology they are less than 1 hour. For urgent analyses, a haemogram can be generated within two minutes.
The Ingolstadt Clinic’s digital laboratory is now connected to four external hospitals and several external practices via a secure VPN (Virtual Private Network) and Physicians can easily access expert knowledge and initiate effective therapies rapidly
